Online movie club? Yes!

On May 27th, our first online film club, called Online Movie Night, was successfully made. The participants had to watch an unusual, not so well known film. This was followed by a “roundtable” discussion. The communication was in English, as the participants were our foreign ESC volunteers from Debrecen.

Our choice of film was David Fincher’s The Game (1997). This is a mystical thriller based on the protagonist’s involvement in turn-based, not always harmless adventures during the game.
During the conversation we discussed, that the film is not so character-centered. The game itself is given the main role in the film. Of course, the game can only be believable if it becomes part of the life of a character. Michael Douglas plays the main charachter Nicholas Van Orton, whose life turns upside down, cause of the game. Participants agreed that the twisted story hides some excitement, but the comedy can also be found in it. The end result supriesed some of them but there were also ones who were waiting for a more tragic ending. There were somebody who thought that the conclusion was pretty absurd enough. The one-and-a-half-hour discourse took place through Google Hangouts. Although the filmmaking poses some pretty serious issues, the participants also managed to smuggle a little humor and hilarity into the conversation, so overall the event was in a good mood.
We hope that if everything turns out right, maybe we can do a movie club in June as well.
